Seven Pixels High

In 1984, Steve McCurry was in the Nasir Bagh refugee camp in Pakistan, documenting the countless numbers of people fleeing the war in Afghanistan following the Russian invasion.

The image he took of 12 year old Sharbat Gula was just one of many, and neither McCurry nor Gula had any idea just how iconic the image would go on to become. Indeed, until many years later, Gula had no idea that the photo even existed, let alone that her face was known all over the world. Such is the fame, infamy even, of Sharbat Gula, she now lives in anonymity to protect her from those who would wish her harm.
